Pastors of the Evangelical Lutheran Free Church (Germany) visited St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Plzen, Czechia for an anniversary worship service. They wore the Talar (black gown) with a Beffchen (white ribbon) at the neck. That ribbon is spread open identifying them as Lutheran pastors. The ribbon is sewn together for Reformed pastors. Ecclesiastical dress not only reveals theological allegiance but it is rich in symbolism. A favorite is the white alb, a vivid reminder of the Christian’s identity in Christ our Savior. We can say that God ”has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness (Isaiah 61).”
