Our Work in Latvia
The Confessional Lutheran Church of Latvia (CLCL) grew from the efforts of ELS professors who presented lectures on theology in Riga during the 1980’s. Some who attended the lectures became committed to confessional Lutheran theology. The Augsburg Institute was founded to further the cause, publishing The Latvian Lutheran, a monthly publication which became widely-read in Latvia. Several men, including Superintendent Rev. Gundars Bakulis attended Bethany Seminary in Mankato, MN. Currently eight bi-vocational pastors serve as many congregations and nearly 800 adults.
Though reductions in funding have curtailed printing of The Latvian Lutheran, the publication is now online. In June of 2011, a new church building was dedicated at Ozolneicki.
