Dear Fellow Workers in Christ’s Kingdom:
Somebody once said, “What a grand world it would be if we could forget our troubles as easily as we forget our blessings.” The post-Easter season, which really is our entire life on this earth, stands to remind us how troubles in life truly are fleeting in comparison to the glory that awaits believers. Through faith in the saving merits of our risen Lord Jesus, we will one day — both in body and soul — join with Christians who have gone before us in enjoying an eternity of complete bliss, praising the Lamb at the center of the throne! So… got troubles? Yes, they are real. But they are also time-limited. “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all,” 2 Corinthians 4:17. Have a great post-Easter!
Blessings in Christ,
John A. Moldstad
Thankful for gifts received
Our synod, college, and seminary were presented several checks in March from the estate of Jeanette Ruth Gulbrandson of Albert Lea, Minnesota, who died February 16, 2015, at the age of 90. Jeanette was a student at Bethany Lutheran High School (1943 grad). The gifts were brought by Jeanette’s nephew, David Swanson, on behalf of the Gulbrandson family. Thoughts of Faith, Helping Hands, Cross-stitch, Bethany Lutheran Theological Seminary, Bethany Lutheran College, and two ELS congregations were all recipients of the estate. We thank God for the life of Jeanette, and that of her earlier departed husband Howard, and we pray God blesses these gifts for the benefit of His Kingdom’s work in spreading the saving gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Circuit 7 (Southern Minnesota and Iowa) held their annual winter youth retreat in Albert Lea, Minnesota, in early March. Youth from as far north as Mankato, Minnesota, and as far south as Indianola, Iowa, were in attendance; in all there were 17 youth ranging from grades 6 to 12. Pastor James Kassera, Pastor Matt Pfeifer (WELS), Vicar Jeff Hendrix, and one lay adult were in attendance to lead devotions, Bible study, and help with activities. The group enjoyed games to work on team-building and communication, a few hours on the rock wall, and water polo and swimming to close out the day. “This was a wonderful event again this year. Thanks to all who participated, and we hope to see everyone again next winter,” says Pastor Kassera.
Seminary Pastors’ Institute
Bethany Lutheran Theological Seminary will host a Pastors’ Institute July 6-7 in Mankato, Minnesota. Professor Timothy Schmeling will give a presentation on “Concordia, Discordia, Et Irenicum: The Reception of the Book of Concord in Seventeenth Century Braunschweig Lutheranism.” This presentation will demonstrate how the Book of Concord was received in the northern German states. It explains some of the conflicts involved in the acceptance of the Book of Concord in Lutheran lands and helps explain the genesis of the Syncretistic Controversy (ca. 1645-86) of the seventeenth century. Pres. Gaylin Schmeling will give a presentation on “Church of the Lutheran Confession: Then and Now,” centering on the origin and recent history of the CLC.
