Checking Facts

With the two major political conventions over, we’ve heard numerous “fact checks” of the speeches of various politicians and their supporters.  “Spinning” the numbers, the history, and even the facts is common.  “Spinning” isn’t anything new.  Satan did it in the Garden of Eden:  “Did God actually say, ‘Youshall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”  Eve spun:  “‘…You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” (God never said not to touch it.)  Adam spun:  “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” (It’s not MY fault! SHE made me do it! And YOU gave her to me!)  see Genesis, Chapter 3

What we call “spinning,” God calls lying.  How can we know what is true and what isn’t?  Well, fact-checkers can help… if they’re honest.   They can make it worse if they’re not honest.  The fact is, we’ll be lied to in this life—and not just by politicians. It’s a result of the sinful world and life we are born into. FACT:  We are conceived and born in sin. (Romans 7:18; Jeremiah 17:9; Psalm 51:5)  FACT:  We can’t get ourselves out of the punishment that is waiting for us because of that sin. (Romans 3:20; James 2:10; Romans 3:23)  FACT:  There is only one way for us to be saved eternally- through faith in our Savior, Jesus Christ. (John 3:16; John 14:6)  His perfect life is credited to us.   His death paid for our sins.  (Galatians 3:13) His resurrection proves it.  (Romans 4:25) And by God’s grace, believing these facts in God’s Word, we are saved from eternal punishment.  (Ephesians 2:8-9)

As we hear more “fact-checking” of the politicians and fact-checking of the fact-checkers, remember the facts that are really facts—absolute truth—found in God’s Word.  -PF
